Henna/Mehndi designing is a very popular art in Asian culture. It has been practiced in Indian subcontinent and Middle East cultures for a very long time and even today, the traditions and culture of Asia (particularly India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) put a lot of emphasis on Mehndi. It is an inseparable part of all important functions like weddings, religious festivals and cultural occasions. Women apply mehndi fervently because it not only beautifies their outlook but is also thought to bring them good luck. That is one reason why mehndi is a compulsory part of Asian weddings celebrated both in native countries and other countries like UK.

An Asian bride is incomplete without mehndi. Just like outfit, jewelry, makeup and venue décor, mehndi designs also hold their important for a bride as they contribute a lot in her overall appearance. Mehndi comes in a variety of colours although black and red are the traditional colours for brides. Nowadays, a new trend is seen where henna designs are filled with glitter or colourful beads.

There are three designs in mehndi that are very famous with brides, namely Pakistani, Indian and Arabian mehndi designs. These designs can be applied either individually or in combination: a lot depends on the choice of the bride—or the henna artist! Pakistani Designs

Pakistani mehndi designs are quite intricate, detailed and delicate. These designs commonly use dark, blackened outlines filled with intricate patterns or decorations with very few left out spaces. Such designs are commonly applied with the help of a professional artist as their complexity is not easy to be imprinted at home by anyone.

Pakistani mehndi designs have various styles including Floral designs, Peacock designs, Shaded Mehndi designs, Carrie Designs and many more. However, the most common Pakistani Mehndi design is that of vines and leaves accompanied by elegant flowers. Pakistani mehndi designs usually cover the full hand and may often continue to the elbow. In Asian culture, brides also deck their feet with beautiful henna designs.

Indian Designs

Just like Pakistani mehndi designs, Indian designs are also delicate and complex which tend to glorify the culture and heritage of the area. Indian designs cover the full hand and feet and impart a glorious look to the bride’s aura. Like Pakistani designs, Indian mehndi designs are also applied with the help of professionals.

Perhaps the most common mehndi design in Indian style is the Peacock design. It gives a pretty feminine look to the bride. Therefore, a large number of brides opt for this design. A circular motif or Tikkya complemented with intricate designs on fingers is also a common design used by Indian brides. Paisley designs and Chequered Patterns are also used in weddings.

Arabian Designs

Because of their charming patterns, Arabian mehndi designs have become very popular down the years. One reason for their popularity is that these designs are simple, elegant and not messy at all. Arabic mehndi includes one flowing pattern extending from one end of the palm to the tip of a finger. Those ladies who do not have time to form intricate designs on their hands or are simply fed up of such designs can easily opt for Arabic style mehndi.

In Arabic style, big floral designs are used which do not cover the full hand. Even if brides go for full hand designs, they mostly consist of elaborate sequences of flowers, paisleys, peacocks and motifs of moon and stars. These designs can easily blend in with every style of outfit ranging from Anarkali frocks to Sarees giving the bride a heavenly outlook.
